Hopefully the bats wake-up because right now Detroit is hitting .206 with 24 strikeouts in three games.

Murderers Row? Not quite. Not yet anyway.

Wow. Murderers Row part deux is not exactly off to a great start. Brian Bannister gave up 2 hits through 7 innings, striking out 4. In fact – Edgar Renteria was the only Tiger to get a hit all day, as they got shut out 4-0.
0-2 to start the season? Against KC? WTF?

Overall, it was an adequate start to the season. Adequate because it was a good game, if you’re a fan of the sport. 11 innings is always good. It’s like getting extra wings on your plate for the same price. Of course if they make you sick, you’ll regret your gluttony.

The game drew 44,934 fans – breaking the mark set in last year’s opener thanks to the 778 new seats that were just added.

Verlander looked good through 5, then faltered. Cabrera earned some of that cheddar. I was a section to the right of the homer that Guillen absolutely crushed and I can say that Denny Bautista looked surprisingly good 9even though he got charged with the loss). Inge gunned somebody out from Center with a bullet. But it wasn’t enough, and despite having a great chance at the end, it wasn’t meant to be.

Oh well, I enjoyed being there, and although they lost, I’m sure this is going to be a great season.

I hope.

Come to think of it, the Royals played unusually well against Detroit if memory serves. Not like the Brett/McRae era, but well nonetheless. It should be fun either way. And since we plan to start drinking at Jacoby’s by 9am, I may not really care win or lose.

Cheers!

Jeremy Bonderman is back! Well, maybe we should temper that a little. This is the Royals. But the fact is, he looked like the old Jeremy Bonderman. The Jeremy Bonderman that wasn’t guaranteed to put you in a 6-0 deficit in the first inning. The guy with serious heat and nasty movement on his pitches. I want to see him in one more start, but this certainly bodes well for the Tigers. The psychological victory alone for Jeremy to get out of the first inning unscathed, and to last 7 quality innings is priceless.

Isn’t it amazing how great The Tigers look when they get quality starts from their pitching? They looked unbeatable in Verlander’s last start, and again with Bonderman on the mound. Andrew Miller has obviously been a huge let down, and losing Jair Jurrjens hurts, but if Verlander and Bonderman can continue to pitch as they have in their most recent starts, The Tigers just might have a chance. The bullpen has been flawless. All of these things should equate to a turnaround, but it might be too late. The Indians and Yankees don’t seem to be letting up. They’ve gained ground on the Mariners in the Wild Card, but not on New York. And The Tribe have made it perfectly clear that they don’t plan on losing the Central this year.

All of this means we’re in store for an interesting September.

Andrew Miller is about one more horrible start away from “reassignment”. He lasted an entire 2/3 of an inning. He gave up 5 runs in the process. I believe that equates to a 67.5 ERA, not quite good enough to be the ace on a whiffleball team. I think the most runs I’ve ever put up against my son was 37. Of course, he’s only 9.

Basically, the Tigers starting pitching has been their achilles heel for a couple of months now. This, coming from one of the most vaunted young pitching staffs in all of baseball last year. It’s a shame, really – especially when you look at how amazing the bullpen has been. After all, for the next 8 1/3 innings of bullpen work, The Royals didn’t score, and only scattered a couple of hits.

But of course, none of this matters when you can’t score a run. I’ve never seen a team not score, and still win. Pitching is so important, but when you don’t score it doesn’t matter if Cy Young and Walter “Big Train” Johnson were out there. The Tigers still wouldn’t win.

The Indians don’t show any signs of cooling off. There is still a month left, but The Tigers just can’t seem to put it all together.

Well, I said yesterday that I wouldn’t be surprised after beating the Yankees 16-0 if the Tigers came back and lost to the Royals 2-0. I stand corrected on the score. After somehow managing to only score 3 runs on 16 hits, the Tigers have started off this all important West Coast swing with a resounding thud. You would think 16 hits against the Royals should just about do it. Guess not.

The Tigers got hits at all the wrong times. Nobody came through with a clutch hit. Nobody. They need to go 5-1 on this road trip, and they already got the loss out of the way. So now they just have to win the next two against the Royals and sweep Oakland to come back home and still have the Indians in their sights. Meanwhile, they have fallen to 3 1/2 back of the Tribe.

But hey, they beat the Yankees 16-0, right? Great.
